A new Library Learning Resource Centre (LLRC) for the University of the Creative Arts on their Farnham Campus.
The project was constructed using the Design and Build procurement route for a cost of £3.5M.
This project was developed for the UCA to provide a central library and learning resource centre for their rapidly expanding self-directed information access in an education sector where the use of digital information was far more advanced that in any other.
The project therefore was one of the very earliest in the HE sector to significantly reduce its hard copy stock and install an open access computer installing of approximately 250 workstations.
Large numbers of students combined with the heat output from 250 ‘traditional PC and screens’ ensured that the ventilation requirements were challenging. Together with services engineers Atelier 10, we developed an architectural form and environmental servicing system, which permitted the entire building to be naturally ventilated with the corresponding significant reduction in energy use.
The project has been a great success at the university and has won a Waverly Design Award.
