The main element of the building is a large flexible teaching space that contains moveable partitions and extensive IT equipment including 3D projectors. The flexibility of the space allows groups of 90 learners to be taught in a range of group sizes, with viewing areas allowing the building to be used as a teaching centre.
The showcase CLC building is linked to three smaller centres at other sites (Claverham Community College, Ringmer Community College and Oathall Community College), all designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
The smaller centres are highly sustainable buildings constructed of rammed earth walls. This ancient construction method provides a natural feel to the buildings, with a high level of thermal mass which creates comfortable teaching spaces.
Materials excavated from each site were used in their construction, combined with locally sourced timber cladding and green roofs.
