‘A piECE of their mind’: A lecture series for architects, by architects
Throughout 2024, we have invited prominent architects to talk about a topic of their choice as part of our lecture series ‘A piECE of their mind’.
The events are spearheaded by ECE Design Director, Paul Fender, and in partnership with the RIBA Sussex, and we have had the pleasure of being joined by industry giants John McElgunn, Chris Williamson, Graham Morrison and Adam Richards this year.
We are pleased to announce that we are continuing “A piECE of their mind” in 2025, and are proud to kickstart the next year with Dr Cindy Walters from Walters & Cohen. Find out more and register for the event here.
Read on for our highlights from each of this year’s lectures.
A piECE of their mind – John McElgunn
Throughout his career, John has worked on a wide range of projects with some of the most notable being the British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre. John’s expertise lies in designing and managing projects in the public and community sectors such as museums, and collaborating closely with the invested stakeholders. Throughout the talk, John went through some of his pioneering projects in great detail and the importance of the ‘Diagram’.
A piECE of their mind – Chris Williamson
With a focus on transport design and urban spaces, Chris started the evening by sharing the story of how the practice of Weston Williamson + Partners began by chance when he sat next to Andrew Weston at university simply because of their last names. And so began a friendship and journey that has led Chris to design beautiful buildings across the globe including several train stations. Throughout the talk, it became clear how designing urban spaces to work for those who use them is a priority for the future, leaving everyone in the room inspired.
A piECE of their mind – Graham Morrison
On 19th June, we were honoured to welcome Graham Morrison, founding partner of Allies and Morrison to our Sussex studio. Graham highlighted his significant projects (including his own house), showcasing his expertise in the intricate details of building construction with an emphasis on integrating his design into the existing context of the surroundings. One significant project he highlighted was the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. This development incorporates an a new planetarium enclosed by a tilted bronze clad cone which sits alongside the Grade II* listed South Building and a new build extension.
A piECE of their mind – Adam Richards
In October, we were joined by Adam Richards from Adam Richards Architects, who started his interesting lecture by sharing the cinematic inspiration of the design of his own home, Nithurst Farm. Adam took the room on a tour through each room in detail, sharing and comparing them to scenes in the film “Stalker” from 1979. The lecture concludes with Adam going through the design considerations and final build of the Mayfield School Health Centre.
